Southern Echo has worked to address inequities in education, housing, and the political drivers of these inequities, through our grassroots capacity-building programming, census and redistricting training and monitoring, and governmental transparency and accountability organizing. However, within the last few years, health disparities have emerged from a primarily medical lens to be viewed in the context of the more fundamental injustices that Mississippians face, especially African-Americans in low-wealth communities.
Specifically, in this time of uncertainty regrading the evolving Covid-19 or Corona Virus Pandemic, it is more important than ever that vulnerable and marginalized communities have unfettered access to accurate information and available resources and services. To this end, this page will be constantly updated and monitored to ensure that it provides the most relevant and reliable information available.

FOOD SERVICES AND EDUCATION RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS
Jackson Public Schools – Food programs are available for Jackson Public School families during school closures. For more information,

Jackson Public Schools offices of Partners in Education and Child Nutrition are working together to cover the nutritional needs of children during the Covid-19 outbreak. Learn more here.
Madison County Schools are offering meals via curbside and walk-up service at East Flora Elementary, Camden Elementary and Ann Smith Elementary schools on weekdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meals for children are free regardless of where they go to school. Adults may also purchase a meal for $3.75.
Holmes County School District is delivering breakfast and lunch to all school bus stops in the area. Students are asked to be at bus stops between 7:30 and 9 a.m. for breakfast, and between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for lunch.
Rankin County School District is serving grab and go meals at McLaurin Elementary, Richland Upper Elementary and Pelahatchie Elementary. All children 18 and under will receive a free meal, even if they are not a student in Rankin County. Adults may purchase a meal for $3.50. Meals will be served between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Pearl Public School District is serving gran and go meals at Pearl Lower Elementary from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All children under 18 eat free, even if they were not a PPSD student. Adults can buy meals for $3.50 (cash only). First responders in uniform can also eat free. Meals will be brought to cars in the parking lot.
Vicksburg Warren School District will deliver free meals to children 18 and under (begins March 18). Meals can be picked up at bus stops between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Click here to see the list of bus stops. Parents of children who do not normally ride a bus can sign up here.
Natchez-Adams School District is providing meals for all children up to 18 (begins March 18). Meals can be picked up at Frazier Elementary, West Elementary, Morgantown Middle, Natchez High School, Broadmoor Community Center parking lot, Lagrange Community Center parking lot, New Hope Baptist Church parking lot, or Daughter of Zion Church parking lot.
Jackson Public Schools will serve grab and go breakfast and lunch during school closures. Any child under 18 can pick up a meal at no cost, even if they aren’t a JPS student. Adult meals are $2.50 for breakfast and $3.75 for lunch. Meals are serbve from 9 to 11 a.m. on March 18-20 and March 23-27 at: Boyd Elementary, North Jackson Elementary, Spann Elementary, Blackburn Middle, Gallowway Elementary, Lake Elementary, Raines Elementary, Smith Elementary, Marshall Elementary, Peeples Middle, Whitten Middle, and Wilkins Elementary.
Craft Campbell’s Donuts – Starting Tuesday March 17 – March 27, Campbells Donuts will begin passing out up to 60 hot breakfasts to children
in need. Pick-ups are from 7:30 to 8:00 am. Requests include to-go boxes, four volunteers to cook, package, and pass out the meals. Please send a message on

The Village Kitchen – Starting March 16th, The Village Kitchen will be providing lunch for students impacted by the school closings. Their goal is to feed 100 students or more each day. If you would like to help, please contact the business. Location: 219 W County Line Rd, Jackson, MS 39213
Vowell’s – Vowell’s will be providing breakfast and lunch services for students impacted by the closings. Breakfast will be distributed 7:00 am – 8:00 am and Lunch will be distributed 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. Guidelines: A child must be present to partake. There is a limit of one meal per child. Please see a store personnel for more details on location.
Soul City Church – Starting March 16th – March 27th, Soul City Church will be serving lunches each day from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm. Location: 226 Whitfield Street Jackson, MS 39201
Brightbeamnetwork.org is also offering COVID-19 resources for families and educators. Included on the site, on the bottom of the page, you can find links to free digital learning and resoures.
UTILITIES ASSISTANCE
Comcast: On the heels of offering new, low-income Internet Essentials customers two months of free internet and raising the speed of that program’s service to 25/3 Mbps, Comcast has announced additional steps to help ensure people stay connected to the internet as more schools suspend classes and companies encourage employees to work from home due to the Coronavirus. Please review press release for more information.
Entergy: For the next 60 days, Entergy will halt customer disconnections if nonpayment is the result of the coronavirus. Customers can call 800-368-3749 or visit their website for more information.
200 service providers nationwide (including AT&T, Cox Communications, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon) have signed onto the Federal Communications Commission’s Keep Americans Connected Pledge. The pledge states that for the next 60 days, the company will:
- not terminate service to any residential or small business customers because of their inability to pay their bills due to the disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic
- waive any late fees that any residential or small business customers incur because of their economic circumstances related
to the coronavirus pandemic - open its Wi-Fi hotspots to any American who needs them
In addition, several providers are removing data limits as
well as expanding services for low-income households. AT&T, Comcast, and T-Mobile, have
all removed data caps for the time being. Expansion of services includes:
- Comcast internet essentials is free for 60 days
- HH with students – 60 days free of Spectrum or Altice
- Connect2Compete – expand and improve service

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
Hinds Behavioral Health Services Mobile Crisis Response Team is comprised of mental health professionals able to assess and provide face-to-face intervention for Hinds County residents in psychiatric and/or mental health crises. Mobile Crisis is available 24/7, nights, holidays, and weekends. Please visit their website for more information.
BUSINESS & EMPLOYMENT ASSISTANCE
The Greater Jackson Jackson Chamber released a statement on Tuesday, March 17 with guidelines and resources for local business owners who may apply to the U.S. Small Business Administration for low-interest loans for working capital through the agency’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan declaration. You may find more information on the Mississippi Emergency Management’s website. For additional information on available assistance through the SBA, please visit their website.
