Southern Echo releases 2 Color-Coded MAPS of Mississippi School Districts that illustrate:
- FY 2016 MAEP underfunding PER PUPIL in each school district; and
- FY 2016 MAEP underfunding PER DISTRICT.
- FY 2016 MAEP Amount that should have been allocated to each district if MAEP FULLY FUNDED
- FY 2016 MAEP Amount each district lost because MAEP NOT FULLY FUNDED
Fiscal Year 2016 runs from July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016, which is the current school year.
In the 2016 session, the MS Legislature will again appropriate MAEP funds for FY 2017, which runs from July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017.
The threat by Republican legislative leaders ls to fund MAEP at the same ativan level as FY 2016. See the attached maps! That means our children in school and our districts will be underfunded by approximately the same amounts as shown in the maps.
However, the Republican leadership is threatening to change the MAEP from an expense formula based on the cost of educating students in “C” schools, to a formula based on “A” and “B” schools. The purpose is to reduce the MAEP appropriation to reflect the lower cost of doing business in higher performing districts where there is a different demographic base in terms of race and wealth.
So the underfunding of the actual needs of districts and students in FY 2017 may become worse than shown in these maps!
