Roadmap to Census 2030
The United States Constitution mandates a population count every 10 years of everyone living in the United States. The first census was conducted in 1790 and one has occurred every 10 years since then.
Why is the Census Important?
- Census data is used to determine the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives.
- It is also used to adjust or redraw electoral districts (redistricting) based on where population increased or decreased.
- Census data inform decisions about allocating hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding to communities across the country for hospitals, schools, clinics, housing, transportation, roads, nursing homes, and other programs and services.
