The agenda included an overview of the Children First Act of 2009 (Senate Bill 2628), Senate Bill 2288 (the legislation creating and authorizing the Task Force), and an overview of the assistance to low-performing schools and districts.

Southern Echo and MS Delta Catalyst Roundtables presence is necessary to ensure that the community’s voice is heard in the process, that the appropriate review and feedback is given to proposed policy changes, and to make presentations to the Task Force on how our communities understand and evaluate these policies when we have the opportunity to do so.

The Task Force agreed that the next Task Force meeting will be held on September 16 at the Hilton Hotel in Jackson so that Task Force members can attend the Governor’s Summit on Underperforming Schools from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Additional Task Force meeting dates will be determined by the co-chairs of the Task Force, Rep. Cecil Brown and Sen. Videt Carmichael, who chair their respective Education Committees in the state legislature. People who want to be invited to the Governor’s Summit need to inform Mr. Johnny Franklin, Legislative Liaison for the Governor, by phone at 601-576-2012 or by email at jfranklin@governor.state.ms.us, and provide Mr. Franklin with a snail mail address to which a physical invitation can be sent.
